Sunday Sermons

Our theme for May – July is “Listening to Ourselves”. This follows on from the themes of “Listening to God” and “Listening to Our World” that we have followed in previous terms.

The aim of “Listening to Ourselves” is this: If we have self-understanding, and knowledge of our acceptance and security in God’s love, then we are free to be our unique selves as God intended, not squeezed into the mould of other’s expectations and limitations.

The reality when we do listen to ourselves is that we hear a cacophony of conflicting voices . . “I really ought to . . “, “I wish I could . . “, “I didn’t sign up for this”, “Back out”, “Stand firm”, “Why me?”, “This is fun”, “How did I end up here?”

We will be looking at parts of Paul’s letter to the Galatians and 2 Corinthians where he tackles the reality of living as a Christian under the pressures of life. We will also be teasing out some of the ways we can discover our own shape – what God has made each of us to be and do. To help in that we will be holding some “S.H.A.P.E. Clinics” to help us work that through for ourselves.

Of course, God does sometimes put us as square pegs into round holes to rub off some of those rough edges. The bottom line is stated clearly in the first reading of our series: “The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love.” Gal.5:6b.
